The difference between a laser printer and an ink-tank printer matters, but it is not the first decision. A monochrome, print-only laser cannot scan a signed page or reproduce a color chart. A color ink-tank all-in-one can cover those jobs, yet its extra functions and liquid-ink maintenance solve nothing if black text is the entire workload.

Begin with the documents moving through the office. If paper only moves out, ask whether it must be in color. If paper also needs to come back into the computer, scanning changes the machine class before print speed or advertised page yield enters the comparison. And if printing is rare or specialized, owning either machine may be the wrong answer.

When a printer at home is the wrong solution

Do not turn an occasional print job into a page-count formula. The useful comparison is the complete job: what must be printed, how soon, on which paper, and whether the document can leave your control.

A local service can remove the purchase, storage, supplies, and maintenance of a home printer. It may also handle paper sizes, finishing, or color work that a compact office printer cannot. But service availability, turnaround, privacy practices, file handling, and output quality are local facts. Verify them for the provider and document rather than assuming that outsourced printing is always convenient or appropriate.

Ownership starts to earn its place when immediate access or control of the workflow matters repeatedly. That still does not choose laser or ink tank. First separate these requirements:

  • Output: black text only, grayscale graphics, ordinary color documents, or photo-oriented work.
  • Paper capture: no scanner, an occasional flatbed scan, or a stack of originals that needs an automatic document feeder.
  • Two-sided work: duplex printing and duplex scanning are different capabilities; one does not imply the other.
  • Media: envelopes, labels, card stock, photo paper, and non-letter sizes must appear in the exact model’s supported media instructions.

Color and scanning change the question before speed does

A laser engine and an ink tank do not settle every quality question

The engine labels establish the consumable system. They do not, on their own, prove better text, color, speed, reliability, maintenance burden, or total ownership cost.

This article uses the Brother HL-L2460DW and Epson EcoTank ET-4950 because they make the two ends of the approved decision concrete. It is not a claim that every home office should choose between only these two products. A cartridge inkjet, monochrome laser all-in-one, color laser, separate scanner, or photo printer may survive a requirement that eliminates both.

The Brother uses toner and a separate drum; the Epson uses refillable liquid-ink tanks and a print head. Each still has model-specific supplies and maintenance instructions. Epson’s ET-4950 guide covers nozzle checks, print-head cleaning, power cleaning, ink filling, the maintenance box, supported originals, and paper handling. Read those duties as ownership requirements, not as evidence that either machine will fail on a schedule.

Independent testing can narrow the uncertainty, provided the observation stays attached to the exact model and method. RTINGS tested both the HL-L2460DW and ET-4950 within its printer test-bench program. Its results support a bounded distinction: the tested Brother produced crisp, legible text and is a print-only monochrome device; the tested Epson produced sharp black-and-white documents, offered color output and a feature-rich scanner, but could render some color documents less vividly than ideal.

That is useful evidence, not a lifetime verdict. One publisher’s test units do not establish how either machine will behave with your fonts, graphics, paper, network, storage conditions, or maintenance habits. They also do not turn page-yield results into a guaranteed cost: local supply prices, included starter supplies, cleaning use, and replacement parts can change the calculation.

Brother HL-L2460DW is the bounded document-only route

The Brother HL-L2460DW product page identifies a US monochrome laser printer with automatic duplex printing, a 250-sheet paper tray, a single-sheet manual feed slot, USB, Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi Direct. It is a printer, not an all-in-one: there is no scanner, copier, or color-print path to discover after purchase.

That absence is the reason to keep it, not a minor feature gap, when all of these statements are true:

  • every recurring job can leave the printer in black and white;
  • paper never needs to return through the machine as a scan or copy;
  • the documented letter-size duplex and supported media paths cover the real documents; and
  • one of its documented USB or network connections works in the office setup.

RTINGS’ exact-model review found sharp text, well-defined graphs, fast document printing, and readiness after idle periods in its tests. Those observations make the Brother a credible document-output example. They do not make it a photo printer, prove flawless graphics, or establish that toner and drum ownership will cost less for a particular household.

Eliminate the HL-L2460DW immediately when color carries meaning—marked-up diagrams, branded materials, charts whose series depend on hue—or when a scanner is part of the job. Do not plan to fill those gaps later with software. The missing hardware function is the decision.

The connection check is equally literal. If USB runs through a laptop dock, confirm the printer, operating system, cable, and dock path rather than assuming every USB position behaves the same; the dock compatibility guide shows how to map that host path. Epson ET-4950 earns its larger role when paper moves both ways

The Epson EcoTank ET-4950 product page identifies a US refillable-ink color all-in-one with print, scan, copy, and fax functions. Epson documents a flatbed, an automatic document feeder, automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet paper tray, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint, and Mopria.

Those functions make the ET-4950 the stronger fit here when the office must create color output or turn paper originals into files and copies. RTINGS’ exact-model testing found sharp black text, capable color and photo output with qualifications, high-quality scans with some fine-detail limits, and a feature-rich scanner with an ADF and duplex scanning. The same review also treats clogging as a real inkjet maintenance risk after idle use. The useful inference is not “ink tank is better for color” or “laser is always lower maintenance.” It is that this exact Epson supplies functions the Brother cannot, while asking the owner to accept a liquid-ink print path and its documented care.

Keep the ET-4950 only if at least one of those added functions belongs to a real task. Then test the part that matters:

  • for charts and client-facing documents, print a representative color page and inspect text, lines, fills, and contrast on the intended paper;
  • for paper capture, scan the real smallest text, handwriting, receipts, or two-sided stack and inspect the resulting file;
  • for copying, confirm the original size, feeder limits, and one- or two-sided workflow in the user guide; and
  • for irregular use, decide whether the guide’s nozzle-check and cleaning path is maintenance you will actually perform.

Do not use the bundled-ink or advertised-yield language as a cost conclusion. Record current bottle prices and availability, the ink consumed by the planned work and maintenance, the maintenance-box path, and the current seller terms at the time of purchase. This article did not verify a durable price, stock state, or return policy for either model.

The two examples separate by function before they separate by performance

The table is intentionally asymmetric. Scanner and color rows are decisive because the Brother does not have those functions. Speed and yield are not used to declare a winner because a faster page that lacks required color or a high-yield supply in an unnecessary machine cannot solve the wrong job.

The last check is your document, not a generic page count

Before selecting a seller, assemble a small acceptance packet from the work the printer must handle. It might include a dense black-text page, a grayscale chart, a color page if color is required, the smallest text that must remain legible, one representative scan original, and any envelope, label, or heavier sheet the manual explicitly supports. Do not invent a craft test when ordinary office documents are the actual job.

Use that packet to close the remaining questions:

  1. Function: Does the machine print every required document in the required color, and can it scan or copy every required original?
  2. Paper path: Does the current manual support each size, type, and weight through the correct tray or feeder, including the intended duplex operation?
  3. Output: Does independent exact-model testing reveal a concern that matters to these files, and can a return-period test settle it?
  4. Connection: Does the exact operating system and USB, Ethernet, or wireless path appear in current support documentation and workplace policy?
  5. Ownership: Are the correct toner and drum or ink and maintenance-box supplies obtainable on acceptable current terms, and are the cleaning and replacement procedures acceptable?
  6. Physical operation: Does the machine fit with trays, feeder, scanner lid, output, cables, and ventilation in their working positions—not only by its closed footprint?

Choose the Brother HL-L2460DW when black-and-white printing is the complete job and its exact paper, connection, and supply path passes those checks. Choose the Epson ET-4950 when color or scan/copy work is required and its print-head care, original handling, output, and supplies pass. Choose another class when the requirement points elsewhere, and keep using a local service when ownership still adds more obligation than useful control.

That is the defensible boundary: eliminate the architecture that cannot perform the work, then test the surviving exact model with the documents that gave the printer a reason to exist.
