The standing-desk measurement most likely to decide fit is the minimum: how low the finished keyboard surface can go while you are seated. A 50-inch maximum says nothing about that end of the day.
Measure that position first. It turns “Which standing desk should I buy?” into a comparison of three concrete projects: a configurable complete desk, a simpler fixed-size desk, or a frame that asks you to choose and install the top yourself.
Measure the seated keyboard height before the room
Set the chair so your feet are supported and your shoulders can relax. Bring the keyboard and mouse close, then measure vertically from the floor to the surface beneath your hands. Record the finished desk height, including the top, rather than a bare metal-frame measurement.
OSHA’s desk guidance treats the work surface, chair, and input devices as a system: the desk needs enough clearance for the legs while the keyboard and mouse remain at a usable height. A low published minimum is valuable only when the complete desk reaches your measured position and its under-frame does not occupy the space your knees need.
If your current desk is close to the right height, measure it too. Note whether the keyboard sits directly on the top, on a tray, or on a thick desk mat. You now have a target you can compare with a manufacturer’s range.
Frame height and finished height are two different measurements
A complete desk usually publishes the height of the work surface as sold. A frame-only product may state a range with an assumed top thickness—or describe the frame and top separately. One inch of material moves the keyboard, monitor, and every stored height by the same inch.

Look beneath the top before adding drawers, trays, and monitor arms
Add one more measurement beneath the surface. Subtract the top thickness, crossbars, control box, cable tray, drawer, and any keyboard mechanism from the usable space. Then compare the remaining clearance with your knees and chair arms in the seated position.
Accessories compete for the same underside. A center drawer may occupy the lowest point. A keyboard tray needs a flat mounting field and enough retraction space. What a 600-pound load rating leaves unanswered
A high published capacity answers a defined loading question. Front-to-back movement, typing vibration, motor sound, collision behavior, control feel, and long-term reliability require a same-condition test or credible independent evidence.
If possible, type on the desk near your standing height. If you are buying online, assemble promptly enough to evaluate it within the current return policy. Place the monitor at its real extension, use the intended floor surface, and notice movement during normal typing rather than pushing the top for a dramatic demonstration.

Choose the purchase path after one final height check
